E2-E4, released in 1984, is a solo recording by German musician and Ash Ra Tempel founder Manuel Göttsching. The album consists of one minimalistic, hour-long electronic track that Göttsching recorded in one take using a sequencer, with improvised keyboards, metallic percussion, and guitar playing. The album is named after the most popular opening chess move 1. e2-e4 which is expressed in long algebraic notation. A noteworthy pun on E2-E4 exists-when expressed in standard scientific pitch notation. Manuel Göttsching is probably best known for E2-E4, the groundbreaking solo album he recorded in under an hour at his Berlin studio in 1981. Released in 1984 and first championed overseas by the influential New York club DJ Larry Levan, E2-E4 was omnipresent on dancefloors during the late 1980s, when it was given a second life by remixers Sueño Latino. It can credibly claim to be the first electronic dance music album. As it turned out later, Goettsching had spent several years getting ready to record his most important album in just one hour. He created his own studio in 1974 when he was 22 and carried out sessions an hour and half long in order to study every connected piece of equipment

Great music as you would expect, but unfortunately the DVD is a big yawn, watching some scruffy middle-aged dude sit in front of a MacBook watching Ableton Live and jiggling his knee a little is not my idea of rivetting entertainment (granted he does play the guitar a little but most of it he does very little!)
I have the DVD and have watched it so I do know the source material. The CD is great but the DVD isn't too exciting.
If you enjoyed other Gottsching performances on dvd then you would enjoy this as well. The above reviewer obviously didn't know the source material before watching.
was it really as bad as that? --> thinking about buying this ... - Thanks
