Dedication is the thirteenth album by American jazz pianist Herbie Hancock. It was recorded in Japan by Hancock alone in 1974 during a Japanese tour. Hancock performs Maiden Voyage and Dolphin Dance on piano, while Nobu and Cantaloupe Island were performed on electric keyboards and synthesizers. First released on LP by the Japanese CBSSony in September 21, 1974, it was not released on CD outside Japan until 2013, first as part of the 34 disc box set The Complete Columbia Album Collection 1972. This is a unique experiment in the Hancock discography, recorded in Tokyo in just one day during a tour of Japan. The first side contains two introspective, complex solo acoustic piano tracks, Maiden Voyage and Dolphin Dance, which are notable since they date from a period when Hancock was supposedly totally immersed in electronics. In late July 1974, Hancock interrupted his busy touring schedule with The Head Hunters Band to record a solo album for CBSSony in Japan, something he had never done before. The only other time he had attempted a solo performance during a recording was an alternate take of Goodbye To Childhood from his Blue Note album Speak Like A Child 1968. Herbies contract with Columbia was structured specifically to allow him artistic and creative freedom. He could deliver various projects which were ostensibly not commercial, and thus was afforded wide artistic freedom for an artist with an exclusive obligation to a single company.
