Raise the Pressure is Electronic's second studio album, released in July 1996. Seven of the thirteen tracks were composed by full-time members Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner, and the other six co-written with former Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos. He was recommended to Electronic via a friend of Sumner's, and commuted to Manchester throughout 1995 during the recording sessions, which stretched from late 1994 to late 1995. Electronic itself chose not to try and compete, following its own low-key path while working with a variety of guest musicians, including returning singer Denise Johnson. Album 1996 13 Songs. There are fewer dance tracks that qualify as club, techno, synth-pop, electro-pop, or however you want to refer to them. There are more conventional pop-rock tracks than I expected, some mid-tempo. Some of the songs on Raise The Pressure are Brit-pop at its finest Forbidden City , For You , and others hint at New Orders oeuvre Dark Angel some engage in a more danceable pop style reminiscent of the Pet Shop Boys. Solid writing and a few new tricks keep it from becoming an exercise in mid-80s English nostalgia. Raise the Pressure Q&A

I didn't know what to expect when I got this album in a thrift store, as I was not at all familiar with the artist. I just had feeling in my gut to expect some sort of electronic/alternative rock a-la Radiohead or Depeche Mode.Turns out it is a very 90-ish styled album, with styles ranging from late 80s pop, to early 90s acid rave and house, and even reminiscent of Depeche Mode, Urban Cookie Collective and M-People at some points. Surely nothing too exceptional or artistically innovative (you could even say that these styles were already considered retro in 1996, the year of release), but it's a pleasant listen throughout, and the variations in style are actually refreshing and sometimes surprising. Overall, what was a "blind purchase" turned out into a good addition for my collection. Definitively recommended to electronica aficionados.
Er ... ever heard of a band called New Order? :-)
