Dizzee Rascal on Making Boy In Da Corner and Jungle Music Red Bull Music Academy. Boy in da Corner is the debut studio album by English rapper and producer Dizzee Rascal. It was first released on 21 July 2003 by XL Recordings in the United Kingdom before being released the following year in the United States. A widespread critical success, Boy in da Corner became one of the most acclaimed records of 2003 and went on to win the Mercury Prize for best album from the UK and Ireland. It also peaked at number 23 on the British albums chart and sold over 250,000 copies worldwide by 2004. Boy in da Corner. Dizzee Rascal. Released July 21, 2003. Boy in da Corner Tracklist. Sittin' Here Lyrics. Quite the feat when you consider it was released when Dizzee was merely 18 years old, and was largely self produced. Not only that, but the album was the first of Grime to hit the mainstream, and was the first to result in a Mercury Prize for Dizzee. Grime at the time was a fresh genre. So new that no one even knew what to call it, with various names such as Eskibeat , Sublow and the now accepted Grime floating around. Grime was a development out of UK Dance music, most notably UK Garage, rather than Hip-Hop as is often claimed. Album 2003 15 Songs. Hip-HopRap , free to Dizzee Rascal Boy in da Corner Sittin' Here, Stop Dat and more. 15 tracks 56:25. East London: Rascal's world is precisely that small, and it returns a sense of rueful perspective to hip-hop lost among the soundtrack tie-ins, Godzilla-aping Bone Crusher videos, and 50 Cent-style mixtape mythmaking. In basic ways, Rascal echoes the wish fulfillment of much of American hip-hop, but he's hardly mimicking their act. Rascal is at ground level, eyes trained on his immediate surroundings. His rhymes, and especially. Birthed by U. garage and seasoned through pirate radio, the terrain Dizzee carves out remains worlds apart from that of Ms. Dynamite and the Streets, two MCs who have come from a fractious-as-ever scene - one that Dizzee's apart from as much as he's a part of - with similar fanfare. And despite comparisons to 2Pac and 50 Cent that won't cease at any point in the foreseeable future, the parallels drawn to stateside rappers haven't often looked beneath the surface. When that album, Boy in Da Corner, was released, Dizzee was still so close to his violent upbringing that he was stabbed 5 times the week of its release. Boy in Da Corner is painted in every shade of fear. Streaks of anxiety, panic, depression, and the aggressive response provoked are present on nearly every track here. The rapid deterioration of relationships between formerly close friends and the corruption of innocence through careless attempts at intimacy burns through this record. Underlining everything is nostalgia, as Dizzee and his characters step over boundaries that cannot be uncross. On his debut album, Boy in Da Corner, 18 year-old Dizzee Rascal instantly stakes a claim that East London is hip-hop's next great international outpost. Full Review. At a time when so much music is little more than a safe retread of comfortingly familiar territory, Dizzee's uncompromising vision is refreshing. Because quite frankly, if 2003 produces another record as ambitious, innovative, thought-provoking or just plain important as 'Boy In Da Corner', I'll be amazed.
